how to find your personal style

How to Develop Your Personal Style: Simple Guide to Dressing Authentically

I used to be obsessed with fashion. I followed every trend and went shopping almost every weekend, convinced that buying new clothes would make me look and feel stylish, elegant and confident.

But the truth is, Most of those items were only worn once, or just for a season. Some never even left the wardrobe until they were suddenly out of fashion.

The worst part? Despite having a wardrobe full of clothes, I still felt like I had nothing to wear and ended up shopping again.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many women are stuck in this cycle. But here’s the reality: constantly following trends or copying someone else’s look disconnects you from your true self. Your personal style should reflect who you are, not what’s trending this season.

What is a Personal Style?

Personal style is your visual identity. It’s how you express who you are without saying a word.

It reflects your personality, lifestyle, values, and how you see yourself. When your style is authentic, it naturally makes you feel more confident and aligned.

Developing a personal style begins with an understanding of the various existing fashion aesthetics. Most people naturally gravitate towards a combination of two or three styles rather than fitting perfectly into one category.

How to Find Your Personal Style

Here’s a practical, step-by-step guide to help you discover and define your unique fashion identity.

1. Analyse Your Wardrobe :

Go through your wardrobe and identify what you wear most often. Your existing wardrobe already reveals your preferences.
Ask yourself:
What makes me feel most confident in these pieces? (Is it the colour, the style, the fit, or the comfort, etc).
Which clothes do you avoid wearing, and why?

This helps define your current style and what needs to change.

2. Start With Inspiration:

Which outfits, colours or styles do I naturally gravitate towards?
Who inspires my fashion sense?
This could be a celebrity or an influencer, or even an ordinary person. Pay attention to any recurring themes, such as neutral tones, minimalist outfits or bold prints.

3. Define Your Style Keywords:

Choose 3 to 5 words that describe the look you want to achieve. (Examples: do you prefer a minimal, edgy, classic, feminine, sexy, casual, or bold style?)

These keywords will help you to stay focused when shopping or putting outfits together.

4. Build a Style Mood Board:

Use platforms like Pinterest or Instagram to search for the style keywords that you have chosen. (Example: casual chic outfits, edgy style inspiration, or classic wardrobe ideas.) Save the looks that resonate with you to create a visual collection.

5. Focus on Fit and Comfort:

No matter how trendy an item of clothing is, if it doesn’t fit well or feel comfortable, it won’t work for you.

6. Create a Capsule Wardrobe:

The basis for building a timeless style is investing in versatile, interchangeable clothing such as quality jeans, tailored black trousers, a white shirt or T-shirt, and comfortable, neutral shoes no higher than 3 inches.

A capsule wardrobe makes styling effortless and consistent.

7. Experiment Without Fear:

Your style isn’t fixed; it evolves. Try out new combinations, explore different styles and push yourself slightly outside of your comfort zone. Over time, you’ll discover what works best for you.

8. Create a Signature Look:

A signature style makes you recognisable. It could be a bold accessory, a favourite colour palette, a specific print or silhouette. (Example: One of my signature pieces is leopard print. I love how it elevates a simple outfit to a bold-looking wow, and it represents my personality. I have them in outfits and accessories.)

Having a signature element makes your style recognisable.

9. Edit Your Closet Regularly:

Your style isn’t fixed; it evolves. Try out new combinations, explore different styles and push yourself slightly outside of your comfort zone. Over time, you’ll discover what works best for you.

Conclusion!

Personal style is a reflection of you and should not be influenced by trends or copying influencers. Finding your style takes time, experimentation, and self-awareness. Stay true to yourself, focus on what makes you feel confident, and your style will naturally fall into place.
